I Scream, You Scream, We ALL Scream for ICE CREAM!

Yep, an Ice Cream Party was the way we celebrated Cailyn’s 4th birthday on June 6th.  Although we’re technically in winter here, it’s still not cold enough yet to be too terribly out of the mood for ice cream, and this theme was also my attempt to shy away from more princess craziness…which is still a fave thing in our house at 4 years old.  SO…ice cream it was!

I actually had the thought today that 4 makes Cailyn look older.  She just seems to be blossoming in so many ways.  We’re still working on all of the same stuff we’ve been working on since, well, a while back, but Cailyn has also shown so major maturity and growth in the last months.  I am very excited to see where God is taking us with our sweet girl.

This past year has been one full of changes and transition for our family, and Cailyn has most definitely taken it all in stride.  We’ve had a few bumps here and there with her, but for a child who cringes when the “plan” changes, she has made us proud of how she has handled it all.

I could go on and on about all that she enjoys and her favorite things, but since I know I have great pictures (thanks to my teammates who made sure some got taken at the party!) to share…I’ll do just that!

Here’s the party in pictures:

Justin put this ice cream parlor thing up…Heladería just means like a little ice cream shop.

First sweet friend to show up, Mariana…

(please excuse the hair in C’s face…my shower trumped her getting her hair fixed for her party)

**Cailyn had been asking for like 2 hours if she could get the door when her friends arrived, so we were like, “SURE!  But it will be another hour or so, Cailyn, so be patient.”  Well, 4pm rolls around (start time), and Justin and I are up in our bathroom finishing up getting ourselves ready when we hear people talking downstairs.  We had not heard the doorbell ring, and Cailyn apparently took us quite seriously when we said she could answer the door, because she was downstairs entertaining before we had even made our way down for the party.  We had a little talk about opening the door without an adult present.  She got the point.

The “cake”  (this video was my teacher)

Oh, to hear the conversations between these two…

Liam Fletcher with his “cookie”-sicle…yummm!

I have no idea what C was doing here or who she was talking to, but this picture basically wraps her up!  She is a HAND TALKER for sure!  She uses those hands and points her finger with the best of ‘em!  She also has an innate ability to raise her eyebrows and dart her eyes in order to send her point across.  We OFTEN find ourselves dying laughing at her.  Most times it is an unconscious thing she does, which makes it SO hilarious!

Blowing out her candle!  One of her sweet peruvian friends yelled, “Dónde está la torta?!” (“where’s the cake?!”) after we sang.  Her mom was so embarrassed, but I assured her mom that I was very aware that our “cake” was extremely non-traditional for Peru…and even a bit for American parties.  Typically, the cake is just a sheet cake, and the kids don’t even eat it at the party.  They each go home with a small box with their piece of cake in it to eat on the way home or once they get home.  I think her Peruvian friends enjoyed stuffing their faces AT the party. :)

Pretty sure Michelle held nothing back at the topping buffet…

my attempt at a birthday banner…

We played “Cold Cone” (like hot potato) and if the music stopped on you, you had to tell your favorite ice cream flavor…**i made this cone like 30 min. before the party…quite tacky looking and also in pieces once the kids got done with the game…but still fun!

The piñata!!  I really enjoyed making this for C’s party, and it was a lot easier than I imagined it being! Here’s where I found the idea!

Corbs finally got his hit {after} all had been broken and scattered. ;)   He still loved it.

All of the kids went home with a new ice cream bowl and spoon…

We all had a great time!  Happy 4th Birthday, Cailyn!!!

Semana Santa:Holy Week

We had a FANTASTIC Semana Santa, and mostly that was because HANNAH CAME TO VISIT!  We were super blessed to have some great time with our Aunt and Sister, Aunt Sister (yes, that’s what the kids call her).  Our week was full of good eats, fun times at the park, special activities for Cailyn and Aunt Sister, an easter egg hunt, a day at the beach, our church group coming over for a night focused on Christ (we watched the Passion of the Christ and had group discussion times…it was moving) and just some good old relaxation time!  She was here from a Saturday night to this past Saturday morning.  Then, we topped our Semana Santa week off by having a great time at church last Sunday…complete with the JOY of seeing our sweet sister, Roxanna, get baptized!!  I don’t have pictures from ALL of our fun times with Aunt Sister OR church yesterday, but I will share what I have.  I wish I had taken more pictures, but you all will probably think I have plenty after I post some on here.  Sidenote: Justin makes fun of me for how long my posts are.  I just ignore him (wink, wink), but I guess I should at least acknowledge to anyone reading my blog that I know I am long winded. :)

OUR DAY AT THE BEACH:

Hannah and I sat under the umbrella at got great sister talk time while Justin played in the sand with the kids.  We played, too, but Justin was so incredibly great to bless us with that!  This is what we were entertained by about every 5 minutes…Corban “cleaning” his tongue with salt water…

Aunt Sister suggested we feed the birds…Cailyn loved it!  There were really only 2 that were brave enough to venture toward C…it was hilarious watching them sneak up and JET off after they got the bread…

Hannah also helped C look for seashells.  Cailyn reminds me of Han a lot in this respect, because she is constantly finding feathers, flowers, and small things in nature that she just HAS to pick up as we’re walking by them.  I remember Hannah always finding feathers and bringing them inside our house when we were small.  Feathers sort of creep me out, and Cailyn knows that, but she had a kindred spirit to help her look for those special beach treasures this time!

MAKING BANANA POPS WITH AUNT SISTER:

One day after school, Hannah and I picked Cailyn up and she got to skip her nap to go to the store and buy ingredients to make Banana Pops with Aunt Sister.  She got to choose her “favorite” cereal to cover them with, and she chose Trix…which she’s never had before, so it didn’t really fall into the “favorite” category, unless she thought we meant “favorite looking” cereal.  We never just buy whatever cereal she thinks looks good, so this was HALF THE EXCITEMENT!  Don’t think Hannah and I didn’t finish off that box of cereal during the rest of the week.  hah!

EASTER EGG HUNT:

**this was the best “pre-hunt” picture I could get…and they hadn’t even had any chocolate yet!**

here’s Aunt Sister trying to explain the rules of the game, “hunt THEN eat”…

“thanks anyway, Aunt Sister!  I think I’ll go ahead and try this jellybean.” (meanwhile, Cailyn was finding all of the other eggs)

Cailyn was on a mission!

Very upset that his 2 “you can eat what’s inside of these” eggs had already been eaten. :) …(yes, we used our beach toy bucket as his easter basket)

Again, just trying to capture a sweet photo of Han and the kids…

thanks to 2 out of the 3 people being photographed, this was the only “close to decent” picture we got…

EASTER SUNDAY

(unfortunately, Hannah was gone by then, but she brought all of the easter basket treats!)

Another photo shoot starting off badly…

first treat they BOTH spotted…the chocolate bunny. :)   Or, as Corban says, “CHAW-KET BUH-NEE!!”

“Cailyn, can you put your arm around brother for a sweet picture?!  Oh, ok…that’s good.  Yeah, that’s too tight.  He’s squealing, do you hear him?  He’s saying, ‘that’s too tight , Sister!  Cailyn thank you for doing that, but please let go now.”  Sheesh.

“Ok, one last time!  SMILE!”

struttin’ his easter bunny stuff…

“WAAAAAAAA!!!  Why can’t I BLOW the bubbles???!!!”

Daddy demonstrating…

(which we all know is a fruitless effort when you have a 20m old wanting to take a go at blowing bubbles)

“Ok, Dad, I got this.”

and, finally…after some more coaching, we got it down.  for the moment at least.

Aunt Sister, great choice on the “Shoelace bracelets”!  She LOVED them!

Finall, I want to say that we also very much enjoyed several great books about Easter and what it means for Christians, and really our world even if the world doesn’t recognize it!  One of my absolute favorites is one called “What is Easter” (click on it to see it on Amazon.com).  I don’t have the author’s name in front of me, but it is great for small kids, because it rhymes, it’s got wonderful pictures, and it’s all about how easter eggs and candy, our Sunday dresses and suits, and the easter bunny are all fun, but the real reason we celebrate is because of Jesus, our Risen Lord!  I suggest you getting it if you have small kids!  Hoping everyone had a great time with family and celebrating Jesus during the week last week!

Before we go Back…

I better post about our wonderful 2nd half of Christmas…haha.  Yeah…a bit late, I know.

Hannah and Jason came from DC to spend time in New Mexico with his family and then our family the week after Christmas.  It was wonderful!  I’ll let the pictures do {most} of the talking. :)

The guys set up Dad’s big Christmas gift the first night…so we could ALL enjoy it. :)   Cailyn calls this “daddyO’s new, big, really special, big TV”.  It is all that. :)

Decorating her new cupcakes with Uncle Juicy Apple…

We had fun at the Jump Around one morning…

Our first full night together was full of a Birthday Party in honor of Jesus & opening gifts together…

Can you tell she liked her new baby dolls?

We played a VERY long game of the extended Settlers of Catan…

Hannah and Jason made some yummy donut holes…

they went fast…

We had a fantastic picnic one afternoon with great food, playground fun, bocce ball, and feeding the ducks…

Aunt Sister taught us how to make homemade playdough…

Then we made a gingerbread house…quite a mess…but fun!

We had a great bonfire/s’mores night before han and jason left…

We had a great time seeing Aunt Sister and Uncle Juicy Apple!

Christmas in College Station :)

We had a great time this holiday season, and we’re sad it’s all come to an end.  Hannah and Jason flew back home to DC this morning, so we’re back to just the 6 of us…us and my parents.  Our traveling has slowed down some, which only means we have a good 13 straight days that we won’t be in the car traveling since the day we came back from College Station to Abilene for our 2nd Christmas with my family until we go to the DFW area to visit with a new church on the 9th.  Was that a run-on sentence?  Life has felt a bit like a run-on sentence lately…so, I guess it’s fitting.

Here’s a run down of all the fun we had celebrating this season while in CS…

We started Christmas Eve with a yummy Potato Soup/Chili/Cornbread dinner.  SO YUM!

Corban embraced the meal!

Cailyn opted for fruity cheerios over our soup/chili meal…she has no idea what she’s missing!

Preciousness!  She’s ready to listen to Allie serenade us with Christmas carols on her viola!

(pretty sure she looks WAY.TOO.OLD!)

Corban’s trying to get in on the concert action.  He’s always been mesmerized by guitars.

I’m surprised I even got a picture of the 3 of them as Justin read “Twas the Night Before Christmas”, because Corban WOULD NOT sit still.  SO not what I had planned for our special tradition time…haha…WHAT was I thinking?!

Time for our 3 elves to start passing out the gifts!

He LOVED his new remote controlled car from Nana!

And she couldn’t get enough of her new Belle princess doll!

Yummy Freebirds for FREE from Uncle P-Rex!

Getting the “Easy Bake Oven Cookies” ready to be baked!

Decorating Santa’s cookies. :)

Here is Cailyn’s letter to Santa.  I just wrote what she told me to.  Unfortunately, Santa was not bringing any of the things she mentioned she wanted (mostly due to the fact that she had never mentioned them before…haha), and I have NOT a clue where she got the idea that Corban wanted a baby Elmo.  We don’t even watch Sesame Street or anything.  Santa did deliver me a new shirt, though.  Lucky me. :)

Everything above was Christmas Eve, and Santa had 1 gift for each of them on Christmas morning.  Corban was too busy eating old snacks out of his snack cup to realize there was anything going on, but Cailyn new the drill.

I have like 5 pictures of Cailyn opening her gift and Corban in the background eating his stale goldfish.  He did, though…finally!…realize there was a new tricycle there for him.  Please begin praying we figure out how to disassemble that enough to fit into our suitcases when we go back to Peru. :)

Already decorating her new cupcakes…

“Smile and show me some of your stocking treats!”

Corbs had fun with his new, Peruvian finger puppets that came in his stocking.

Thanks for all of the wonderful gifts, family!  We had a great time celebrating the holiday with you!

another month down…

OH MY GOODNESS!  I am having trouble keeping this blog thing going.  Why?  I have no idea.  I mean, it’s not like I don’t have grandparents around who play with my kids all the time now! :)   Anyway, I just decided to suck it up and WRITE!

We are in College Station now for Thanksgiving.  We’ve been here since this past Friday evening.  It’s been great so far!  We got in town at like 7pm, and by 8pm we were at Muldoon’s…this coffee shop in CS…AND…WE…WERE…SEEING THE DAVIDSONS!!!!

I know.  Lots of exclamation points.

BUT…that’s how I felt!  It was like I could take a deep breath again.  We were seeing our teammates!  It felt like they made some of our worry die for a bit.  It was refreshing, fun, we laughed, we shared stories, and we totally loved being together.  AND…thanks to grandparents, all of our kids were home either sleeping or enjoying grandparent time!  It was heaven.

I cannot forget to mention why we were at Muldoon’s, though!  January 6th is an important day for our team in Lima.  There are 4 AFC students that will be flying to Lima for a 6 month internship with us beginning then!  This is the first set of interns we will have, so it’s a very exciting time.  God orchestrated it to be that the 4 of them planned a night of music and coffee at Muldoon’s as a fundraiser in order to finalize all of their funds for Peru on a night that TWO of our team families were in TEXAS!  How cool is that?!  So, we went to grab ourselves a Peru Latte and listen to the 2 guy interns play it up (with a few others as well) in an effort to make it to Peru!  It was great fun, and it was also the first time that I had met all 4 of them.  It was a special moment, and if you want to check out pictures from that as well as a breakfast we all attended the next morning together, check out their blog!  Also, feel free to follow their blog as they spend their 6 months with our team this next year.  Once again, that’s… http://www.thelima4.blogspot.com/.

FUNDRAISING UPDATE:  (just because we gotta have one, right?)

We are still in search of a church that can be our main support beginning in 2012!  PLEASE, if you know anyone or any church that is searching for a family to support in Peru…connect us!

We have a couple of churches that we are hopeful and praying about, and we ask that you join us in prayer that God will quickly open a door for us to go back to Peru.

As far as 2011 goes, we are still piecing the year together.  We have received enough money so far for a little over 7 months, and we have about 5 more months to go!  If you are interested in helping us out, please contact us or feel free to send your gift to the Hope Church of Christ in Abilene, TX.

ON TO OTHER THINGS:

Basically I haven’t posted about any of our Halloween fun.  I won’t be doing that, though…haha.  Feel free to check out our pictures on facebook. :)

Also, we traveled to North Dakota and back to Texas.   I will post about our time there in a few days, but if you want to see car pictures from our 18 hour drive there, they are on facebook as well.

As far as our future plans.  Only God knows.  We are hesitant to plan much at this point, and we are at a point that we MUST fully rely on God to make things happen.  That’s good for us, though.  We have learned quite a bit about waiting on the Lord even through frustration and eagerness.

In the meantime…here are a few LEaF PilE pIcTUrES!

Getting the pile ready…

On your mark, get set, . . .

Now brother’s trying to find his way out of the pile…

Cailyn…clearly thinking up her next move on brother…

…”yes, I do believe I’ll lean back here…”

“…hmmmmm…nice and comfortable.  is that screaming i hear coming from somewhere??”

Things weren’t the same for him from there on out…

Well…at least until a bit later. :)
